The Craft of cooking

The Craft of Cooking is a celebration of the art of professional cooking. In response to the brief, Celebrate Craft, I wanted to ask: ‘What defines a craft?’For me, craft is the process of turning skill, experimentation and materials into something considered.

The book is designed for a professional kitchen environment, using metallic acrylic for the front and back covers. Combined with screw binding and hinges, this gives the piece an industrial feel.

I experimented with printmaking, cooking with paper and type design, using culinary squeezy bottles to create unexpected letter forms and imagery.

Starting with Prep, clean and ordered illustrations and infographics, creating a slower, more relaxed pace of viewing. The second chapter, Service, uses chaotic but organised visuals with much more texture, creating a faster-paced reading experience. Finished Dishes is the final chapter. Simple, abstract illustrations inspired by high-end fine dining take centre stage, representing the finished product at the end of the kitchen’s daily journey.

Each of the three chapters highlights a different stage of the day in the life of a shift in a professional kitchen.
